I wish it was that innocuous. Anytime the word monkey is attached to an insult, it is meant to dehumanize. Some racists think they are being nice by saying ‘monkeys’ instead of ‘niggers,’ but the same malicious intent is there. Sometimes these racists are speaking in code, which is where my familiarity with porch monkeys comes from. It was and still is used by some police officers to describe a congregation of black males either in front of a house or a street corner. Just like describing a car full of blacks as a ‘car full of coal.’ So even if you take the ‘monkeys’ out of the insult, I don’t think the intent is readily dispelled. It’s not like someone will have the time, energy, or sensitivity to say, ‘look at the porch occupants of African American descent,’ let alone just seeing human beings gathered in front of a home.
