First, there is no stipulation that BET is just for blacks. In fact, many whites would do go to watch BET occasionally as well as see movies that feature a predominantly black cast. Second, many blacks already consider a majority of Television programming to be ‘White Entertainment Television’ as a majority of television programming is catered to and stars whites. The only reason we seek more african-americans in our television programming is because, quite frankly, we can not relate to much of WET or White Entertainment Television. Third, while it is true that all races have problems, it is also true that some races have additional problems that are beyond their control. This is sometimes referred to as oppression – which, believe it or not, still exists even today. Last, there IS something wrong with a ‘melting pot.’ This metaphore doesn’t take the appreciation of diversity into account. No one wants to lose their identity here. People just want to be appreciated for who they are. I believe the ‘salad bowl’ is the PC jargon that is used today.
