I am a 43 year old Japanese American. My parents were both imprisoned by the ‘white man’ during WWII for simply having the face of the enemy. They were loyal American citizens and never did anything wrong. At the end of the war, can anyone say that any race was hated more by ALL COLORS of the American people than the Japanese? I was taught NEVER to blame the white man for what happened or my faults. My parents taught me that I might have to work harder and prove that I am a good American and that will win out over racism. They were right. I grew up poor in East Los Angeles because after the war, my parents could only find domestic labor. The constantly told me to work hard and not to habor bad feelings. I studied hard, got good grades and behaved. I’ve been in law enforcement for 23 years and have risen to the rank of police lieutenant. Has there been racism? Yes, but I have seen minorities get promotions, not based on merit, but based on their skin color. For me, I am not a recognized minority, so I never got such a benefit. Nobody should blame any race for their misfortune. Stop worrying about things you cannot control. Racism will always be there, but those numbers are few. Work hard and focus on yourself and on things you can change. It is a weak person who always blames others and then gives up saying, ‘the white man is keeping me down.’
