It seems to me that there is a great deal of confusion of what ‘majority’ and ‘minority’ really means. Many people who belong to a ‘minority’ live and work in situations where they belong to the overwhelming majority and they really have no experience of getting along with other groups. This, especially applies to some urban ‘afro-americans’, some rural ‘whites’, some chinese people, etc. Thus, many people are terrified of crossing over and find various excuses to mask their fear. For the woman who married a white man, her ‘friends’ and relatives may be too confused and frightened of going over to ‘enemy’ territory. Also, her husband may belong to an ethnic group that such as jewish or asian that many afro-americans are hostile towards. As the joke says when an afro-american was asked if he was jewish he replied – ‘It is tough enough being black, why would I also want to be jewish ?’ .
