Racism plays a part, but the key is education. There is something wrong with the black community when black kids who do well in school are harrassed for trying to be ‘too white’ by other black kids. Until there is a united and successful effort, both in and out of the black community, to champion education as the way to success, blacks will continue to disproportionately occupy the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, while Asians, Hispanics and untold other ethnic minorities bypass them on the way to prosperity. Racism hasn’t seemed to slow the Asians down. A hundred years ago the Jews and the Irish were at the bottom of the heap. Do you know of any Jewish ghettoes remaining in the United States? They got educated and got ahead. There are always going to be people who don’t like blacks, but that shouldn’t get in the way of getting an education. The problem is education is not highly enough valued in the black community, and it is the parents’ fault. If they don’t send their kids to school ready to learn, you can’t blame the teachers. You can’t blame SATs as being biased; it is the parents’ fault. And it is a pity, because education is free. But the schools won’t get better unless the parents demand it.
