Here in L.A., blacks and Latinos have a long history of not getting along too well. It’s kind of complicated how that all came about, but it’s getting better thanks to hip hop culture and whatnot. But as it is and as it was, it’s seen as a rarity, even an oddity for a Latino and a black woman to go together, as well as vice versa. One is far more likely to see a Latino with a white woman, which is somewhat of a growing trend. Since it’s so rare out here, it causes heads to turn. Possibly as much if not moreso than would a white man with a black woman. I figured it would be different in New York because Puerto Ricans and Dominicans are culturally and racially very close to black people. My guess would be because your friend is of Mexican heritage, and PRs and Dominicans who see it find it odd as do other Mexicans.
