I both agree and disagree with this response-yes, they do not have a clue and their parents are largely to blame. They are feeling emasculated, etc. However, you left out a crucial element: Not only have they been taught that showing emotions is wrong, they’ve been taught that showing pride in their own race and culture is wrong. They have been told repeatedly, in school, the movies, and just in the general culture, that white people who feel proud of themselves and what white people have accomplished are racists who hate blacks and other minorities,like nazis and skinheads. You never see a positive image of a person who says ‘I’m white and I’m proud’, but you sure see positive images of blacks and other non-whites who do. There is a double standard at work in this society, it is socially acceptable to strongly identify with your race IF AND ONLY IF you are not white-little wonder that these white kids are turning to rap and other forms of Afro-centric expression, they are the only artists for whom it is cool and permissable to express such emotions.
