People who say marriage is “threatened” by gays and lesbians are misguided. I think they’re probably just trying to cover up their own prejudices. Gays and lesbians already form long-term romantic partnerships which really are “marriages” in every respect except for the fact that they don’t have a piece of paper from the government saying so. Some churches do not want to allow same-sex couples to marry. This is their decision based on their beliefs, and nobody should interfere with it. However, the government belongs to all of us, not just people in those religions. Same-sex marriage would allow gay and lesbian couples to have the same government-granted legal rights as heterosexual couples, but would not infringe on the religious rights of churches which chose not to allow same-
