While not all Christians in the United States are extremists, many are ‘closet extremists.’ You will not find them picketing on a corner, but they will boycott a major corporation with a whisper from the leader of their church. If you are not a Christian of some sort (many include Catholicism as Christian) then you are obviously crazy and are going to burn in eternal damnation, they say. Christians in the South (generally) are very intolerant of others’ ways.
