I’m the original poster. Interesting how most of the whites who responded said that blacks had a chip on their shoulder, and almost all the blacks assumed I was the one being rude. The fact is I always say, ‘Excuse me’ or ‘Sorry’ if I bump into someone – that’s just common courtesy. But it often has little or no effect – I still get verbally attacked and, I’m afraid, only by blacks. I guess I understand why they might have a chip on the shoulder after the way blacks have been treated, but it sure is a pain to always bear the brunt of it when I’m just trying to get to work!
